Proposal for Palmdale Airport

PALMDALE- Representatives of Los Angeles World Airports, or LAWA, will reveal their plans for the development of Palmdale Regional Airport during two meetings scheduled for Wednesday. The revelations will include how LAWA plans to improve the airport so it can provide passenger service for as many as 400,000 people by 2008 and a possible 1.1 million by 2030.

The plan will describe not only possible passenger and cargo service to and from Palmdale Regional Airport between now and 2030, but also plans for the commercial development of about 17,500 acres east of the airfield owned by LAWA, Beyea said. A telephone survey conducted by URS indicated that between 700,000 and 800,000 people could benefit from air passenger service at Palmdale Regional, he said. Based on that survey, "We are looking at the potential for about 400,000 passengers" at Palmdale Regional by 2008, Beyea said.

Over time, cargo service should be expanded to keep up with both passenger service and the development of nearby air-related businesses, he said. "We see a potential for all-cargo operators that could use the Palmdale area for their distribution," Beyea said. Demand at the airport could generate nearly 60,000 operations - either a landing or a takeoff - in its first year of full-fledged service, expanding to as many as 115,000 operations a year by 2030, he said. In addition to Palmdale Regional, LAWA operates the Los Angeles International, Ontario International and Van Nuys airports.
