Big FedEx distribution center about to rise

PALMDALE - Construction of FedEx Ground's planned 41,000-square-foot distribution center in the Fairway Business Park will begin this week, with completion of the $5 million project expected by midsummer. Richard McClean, developer of the 5-acre site, said Tuesday that the 36-van distribution facility will replace FedEx's office at Eighth Street East and Palmdale Boulevard. Grading for the facility was under way Tuesday and McClean said the slab should be poured in the next week. He expects to release the building to FedEx in August and stressed that there is plenty of room for expansion at the site.

The facility at the corner of Legacy Lane and Grand Cypress Avenue will have docks for trucks, offices and a customer center as well as room to expand, McElean said. He estimated the Palmdale FedEx operation will require between 25 and 100 workers. Isaac Barcelona, CEO of the Palmdale Chamber of Commerce, said the expansion is a good sign and good news. "When companies of that caliber come to our community and expand in our community, it can only mean we're on the right track," he said.

The construction may mean the company is looking into the future and realizing the Antelope Valley will have access to an airport and to high-speed rail, he added.
