Work starts on last leg of HOV lanes in Valley
PALMDALE - Nearly a decade after work began on the Antelope Valley Freeway's high-occupancy vehicle, or HOV, lanes, civic leaders celebrated Friday the start of what could be the $153 million project's final phase - extending the lanes north to Avenue P-8. "Today is a red-letter day in the Antelope Valley," said Doug Failing, the local district director for Caltrans.

"We are starting the final phase of construction on a project that began in 1996. When completed, it will be possible to go from P-8 in Palmdale, 39 miles to San Fernando Road in continuous HOV lanes." The current leg of the project will extend the lanes 6.2 miles and includes widening six bridges within the span. It will cost about $41 million, and is expected to be completed by spring 2007 or earlier.

It's one of many high-occupancy vehicle projects under way in Los Angeles County, where car-pool lanes have grown from 160 miles in 1998 to 220 miles today.
